Starting Equipment

Your character’s starting equipment is managed through a streamlined picklist found in their playbook. This list represents the essential tools and supplies your character typically carries, eliminating the need for tedious gear tracking or purchases. As your adventures progress, your character can acquire new items through trading, looting, stealing, or other means.

Loadouts & Restock

At the start of each session or journey, you’ll determine your character’s loadout, which represents the type of bag or storage they carry for the session and the number of items (loadout slots) they may pick from it, ready to use for the adventure ahead.

Additionally, write down a restock location, which serves as the place where your character stores their possessions and equipment – whatever suits their wealth state and makes sense within the story. Typical restock locations:

  • For a insignificant or lesser wealth – A buried crate, a rented room, a desolate hideout, a hut, or cave.
  • For a comfortable wealth – A horse’s saddlebags, a cart, a house, a warehouse, or a boat.
  • For a opulent or higher wealth – A mansion, a tower, a merchant house, or even a hidden or guarded vault.

How it Works

When in need of an item, simply select it from your playbook’s picklist and mark its slot – from then on it is assumed to be with you on your current mission or journey. You don’t need to decide when you start out what you carry – it’s all available in your picklist. As long as it fits within the loadout you’ve chosen and there are free loadout slots available to pick more items, you can take it. Once all item slots are filled for your loadout, you are considered to not have anything else at hand. To pick other items from your picklist, you need to restock your loadout.

The loadout can be restocked at your chosen location, which the PC uses as base where all the other belongings are placed. To restock the equipment carried and refresh the loadout, the PC must visit the location notes, in the fiction, and narrate how the equipment is replenished and restocked. Once that happens, the loadout is reset and a new one can be takes for the next journey or adventure (until the next restock).

Acquiring New Equipment

Throughout your adventures, you can acquire new equipment and assets outside your picklist in various ways:

  • Trading & Haggling – Exchange or barter with merchants and traders. Read more about this under the Wealth section in the chapter Play the Game.
  • Stealing – Pick up items from the unwary or the unguarded. Is done by facing challenges through play, but failures will result in consequences from victims and the law.
  • Looting & Treasure-Hunting – You can find items and objects on defeated enemies, or discover valuable or unique items during your quests.

In addition to each playbook’s unique equipment picklist, the Equipment section in the Appendix chapter will provide you with ready-to-use picklists for other more generic types of equipment a character might want to acquire.
